Introduction –
Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers enable the determining of one’s location from anywhere on the planet. A GPS receiver is comparable to a standard AM or FM radio. The signals transmitted from satellites are “listened” to by a GPS receiver. Broadcast signals also include a precisely timed predictable code that a receiver may use to calculate the time it takes for a signal to reach a given receiver. To calculate the distance between each satellite, a GPS receiver’s CPU uses these delays and the position of a satellite, which it then uses to approximate location via triangulation.
Based on analyzing signals broadcasted by GPS satellites, a GPS receiver is an L-band radio processor that is capable of solving navigation equations to calculate a user’s position, velocity, and precise time as well. Satellites are continually in motion, as such their signals must be recognized and tracked before a navigation message can be received. The antenna, front-end, and baseband signal processing are functional parts of a receiver that accomplish these objectives.
Once a signal has been captured and monitored, a receiver program decodes the navigation message and calculates the user’s position. Receivers can be classified in a variety of ways, and according to various criteria depending on their nature. Receivers, for example, can be stand-alone or benefit from corrections or measurements provided by an augmentation system or nearby receivers. Furthermore, receivers might be generic all-purpose receivers or custom-built for a specific application, such as navigation, precise positioning or timing, surveying, etc.
GPS receivers offer time in addition to position and velocity. Precision timing is required for synchronization, and to operate a large number of economic operations efficiently, such as wireless telephones, electrical power grids, and financial networks or banking servers. GPS also allows users to determine time with great precision.

Market Dynamics –
Drivers:
GPS receivers are extensively used by construction, agriculture, mining, aviation, and maritime industries. Search & rescue, trucking & shipping, surveying & mapping, tracking, offshore drilling, and space exploration activities also benefit from the use of these receivers.
GPS systems are projected to improve in dependability and coverage accordingly. With greater reliability, surveyors will now be able to obtain more accurate and consistent measurements; difficult inshore navigation of rivers and canals will be safer and more reliable; and the take-off and final approach, as well as landing procedures of an aircraft, will have far greater signal redundancy, resulting in improved safety levels.
The development of new products are also likely to be aided by GPS technology (designed to take advantage of signals from multiple satellite systems). As a result, end-market systems will increase in popularity, boosting market penetration for GPS technology in conventional markets, while developing new applications in non-traditional GPS industries, thereby creating new business ventures in the process.
Restraints:
GPS receivers are in higher demand as the need for equipment tracking in manufacturing plants subsequently increases. Companies are spending greater amounts of capital towards R&D activities aimed at producing improved Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers, as well as newer versions of existing GNSS products.
Furthermore, various developments in technologies such as Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning, and Precise Point Positioning (PPP) for greater accuracy have in turn boosted GPS receiver deployments. GPS is currently underutilized across a number of emerging economies and is anticipated to remain so in the foreseeable future.
While this factor may have hampered the further expansion of the GPS receiver industry in these areas, the subsequent scope for further market augmentation is anticipated to complement the revenue trajectory of this global industry in the years to come.
Opportunities:
To operate an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) commercially, countries including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, etc., must first obtain a license. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved the use of UAVs below an altitude of 400 feet, and that weigh less than 25 pounds, by first responders, including law enforcement organizations, etc.
This is a significant step towards the commercialization of drone operations. Companies are developing UAVs that are tailored to the specific needs of a client. Applications that UAVs are increasingly being employed in are, surveillance, reconnaissance, surveying & mapping, geophysics exploration, and spatial information acquisition. A drone is an unmanned vehicle, therefore it is critical to keep a track of its location at all times, which is an easier task with GPS technology.
Trends:
Over the forecast period, the mining industry is predicted to index the highest CAGR in the mid-and high-level precision GPS receiver market. Surveying & mapping land, blast hole drilling; shovels, dozers, loaders, and graders; haul truck fleet, vehicle tracking & dispatch, and GNSS surveying are examples of the uses of GPS technology in the mining industry. These systems are built using Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) or differential GPS, to maximize the accuracy necessary for various mining activities.
Over the next decade, the APAC region is expected to register the highest growth rate among the global mid-, and high-level precision GPS receiver market. A booming agriculture (precise farming) sector, as well as increasing infrastructural developments, are also contributing to this region’s GPS receiver industry expansion. Both construction and farming activities heavily rely on GPS receivers. However, the on-going pandemic has impacted supply chain activities, resulting in revenue losses, and the sudden halting of manufacturing activities, all of which have had a significantly negative influence on market growth prospects and, ultimately, the economy in general.
