A vending machine collects and sorts the used (empty) beverage containers in an automated manner known as a reverse vending machine. A reverse vending machine usually collects empty cans and refunds the amount to the end-user.In 1972, TOMRA created the first fully automated reverse vending machine. These machines are accessible, specifically where mandatory recycling or container storage laws are available. Once the user puts the empty can into the chute at the front of the machine, they a receipt showing the value of the recycling refund. The user can get the receipt redeemed at the cash register. After the container is inserted in the chute, the machine scans the barcode on the can to identify the packaging type, material, or shape and provide the correct refund. Refillable containers are moved to one storage area while the others are crushed and stored in different bins in the machine. RVM separates beverage containers based on material type (PET, glass, aluminum) and ensures clean, quality materials that can be used repeatedly to make new containers.

The major benefit of RVM is to the environment as it collects bottles and cans for recycling, and the end-users get paid for disposing of the used bottles and cans. RVM reduces the need for raw material in making containers and the need for landfills. The efficiency of RVM can be assessed by its ability to make the recycling collection cleaner and streamlined; also, it reduces the time and mess of staff manually handling and counting containers. Waste recycling has become vital as it is a critical issue of waste disposal due to the limited number of landfills. RVM encourages the users to keep the surrounding clean along with refunds for empty containers and bottles.
Favorable regulations to promote the reuse, reduce, and recycle waste are anticipated to create a lucrative opportunity for key players operating in the target market. Increasing awareness for environment protection and focus on lower carbon emission also an increase in the number of recycling projects that provides substantial growth opportunities for RVM.
Maintenance and installation cost is high, and vandalism and theft of the machines are some of the major restraints factors that can hamper the growth of RVM. Also, a lack of awareness also an important factor restraining the growth of RVM. Increasing demands for reverse vending machines in developing countries like China, India, and government initiatives like Swach Bharat Abhiyan in India, has created plenty of growth opportunities for RVM. A shift of focus on manufacturing digital products for smoother operation and avoiding fraudulent activities, different schemes offered by various government organizations for reducing the level of waste are the trending trends that can drive the growth for the reverse vending machine.
