    Introduction –

Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) is a trusted and extensively used analytical technique to determine the elemental composition of various metals. The types of samples that can be tested using OES include melt, plate, pipe, bolt, rod, wire, and other samples from primary and secondary metal production and processing industries.

The electromagnetic spectrum used by OES includes the visible spectrum and part of the ultraviolet spectrum. In terms of wavelength, it ranges from 130 nanometers to 800 nanometers. OES can analyze various elements from lithium to uranium in solid metal samples, while covering a wide range of concentrations, providing very high accuracy, high precision, and low detection limits.

The elements and concentrations that can be determined by the OES analyzer depend on the material being tested and the type of analyzer used.

All OES analyzers contain three main components – the first is a power source that excites the atoms in a metal sample so that they emit characteristic light or light emission lines; a small part of the sample needs to be heated to thousands of degrees Celsius. This is done by using a high-voltage power supply in the spectrometer through electrodes.

The potential difference between the sample and the electrode generates a discharge, which passes through the sample, heats and evaporates the material on the surface, excites the atoms of the material, and then emits characteristic emission lines of the element. The second component is the optical system. Light, multiple light emission lines from the evaporated sample, called plasma, enter the spectrometer.

The diffraction classification in the spectrometer divides the incident light into wavelengths of specific elements, and the corresponding detector measures the light intensity of each wavelength. The measured intensity is proportional to the concentration offset element in the sample. The third component is the computer system.

The computer system obtains the measured intensity and processes the data through a predefined calibration to generate element concentrations. The user interface ensures minimal operator intervention, and the results are clearly displayed, which can then be printed or stored for future reference.

    Market Dynamics –

As a direct result of its easy-to-use instruments, the increasing adoption of optical emission spectroscopy technology is anticipated to greatly complement market growth opportunities. With the development of technology and functions, a government’s strict safety regulations, and quality control requirements, there is an increasing tendency to outsource analysis requirements to third-party service providers, as well as scrap steel recycling and metal manufacturing industries, such as steel and copper, foundries, aluminum plants, etc.

OES analyzes the demand, and this is expected to increase market growth prospects for various manufacturing industries over the forecast period. Even manufacturers of optical emission spectroscopy equipment are continuing to innovate their existing products and optical emission spectroscopy technologies to expand their product portfolios and to provide operation-specific products for end-use industry verticals. For laboratories, the use of advanced laboratory equipment to improve laboratory operations is of paramount importance.

The equipment used in a laboratory helps to facilitate the accurate diagnosis of diseases and their causes. In addition, R&D projects are funded by governments, private organizations, research centers, national laboratories, and other vertical industries such as the pharmaceutical industry, etc.

In addition, to manage daily operations and the various challenges of a laboratory, certain countries and research institutions across the world are now focusing on strengthening and expanding their budget processes. These are certain factors that will help augment this target market in the years to come.

On the other hand, the high initial costs of OES equipment, and the lack of skilled labor to handle the same are two main factors hindering the revenue growth of this industry.
